1. What Are Life Processes?

Life processes are the basic activities needed to keep an organism alive.

Main Life Processes

Nutrition
Taking food and using it for energy, growth and repair.
Respiration
Breaking down food to release energy.
Transportation
Moving food, gases and other substances inside the body.
Excretion
Removing harmful waste from the body.

Why Are These Processes Needed?

Cells need energy and materials to work. They also produce waste. Life processes supply useful materials and remove waste.

Board line: Nutrition, respiration, transportation and excretion are important life processes.

2. Nutrition

Nutrition is the process by which an organism takes food and uses it for energy, growth, repair and maintenance.

Types of Nutrition

Autotrophic Nutrition

Green plants make food by photosynthesis. They use carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll.

Heterotrophic Nutrition

Humans cannot make their own food. They take food from plants or other animals. The food is then digested and absorbed.

Memory: Plant → makes food. Human → takes food.

3. Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants make food using carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll.

Main Steps

  1. Step 1: Roots absorb water and minerals from soil.
  2. Step 2: Carbon dioxide enters leaves through stomata.
  3. Step 3: Chlorophyll traps sunlight.
  4. Step 4: Light energy helps convert carbon dioxide and water into food.
  5. Step 5: Oxygen is released as a by-product.

Stomata

Stomata are tiny pores mainly present on the surface of leaves. They help in exchange of gases.

Role of Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll absorbs light energy. This energy is used during photosynthesis.

Do not forget: Photosynthesis needs carbon dioxide, water, sunlight and chlorophyll.

4. Human Digestive System

Digestion is the process of breaking complex food into simpler substances that the body can absorb and use.

Path of Food

Mouth → Oesophagus → Stomach → Small intestine → Large intestine → Rectum → Anus

Digestion in Different Parts

5. Respiration

Respiration is the process of breaking down food to release energy for life activities.

Aerobic Respiration

It occurs in the presence of oxygen. It releases a large amount of energy.

Anaerobic Respiration

It occurs without oxygen. It releases less energy.

Respiration in Muscles

During heavy exercise, oxygen supply may become insufficient. Muscle cells can form lactic acid by anaerobic respiration. This can cause muscle cramps.

Memory: Aerobic = oxygen + more energy. Anaerobic = no oxygen + less energy.

6. Human Respiratory System

Path of Air

Nostrils → Nasal passage → Pharynx → Larynx → Trachea → Bronchi → Bronchioles → Alveoli

Alveoli

Alveoli are tiny air sacs in the lungs. They provide a large surface for exchange of gases.

Why Are Alveoli Good for Gas Exchange?

  1. Step 1: They have a very large surface area.
  2. Step 2: Their walls are very thin.
  3. Step 3: They have a rich blood supply.
  4. Step 4: Oxygen can move into blood and carbon dioxide can move out.

7. Transportation

Transportation means movement of substances such as food, oxygen, carbon dioxide and wastes from one part of the body to another.

Transportation in Humans

The human transport system mainly contains heart, blood and blood vessels.

Carries oxygen, food, hormones and wastes.

Carry blood away from the heart.

Carry blood towards the heart.

Very thin vessels where exchange with tissues occurs.

8. Human Heart and Blood Circulation

Four Chambers of Heart

Double Circulation

In humans, blood passes through the heart twice during one complete cycle of circulation. This is called double circulation.

  1. Step 1: Body → right side of heart.
  2. Step 2: Right side → lungs.
  3. Step 3: Lungs → left side of heart.
  4. Step 4: Left side → whole body.

Why Is Double Circulation Useful?

It keeps oxygenated and deoxygenated blood separate. It helps supply oxygen efficiently to the body.

9. Transport in Plants

Xylem

Xylem carries water and minerals from roots to other parts of the plant.

Phloem

Phloem carries food made in leaves to other parts of the plant.

Transpiration

Transpiration is the loss of water as water vapour from the aerial parts of plants, mainly through stomata.

Why Is Transpiration Important?

10. Excretion

Excretion is the removal of harmful metabolic wastes from the body.

Excretion in Humans

The main waste product from protein metabolism is urea. Kidneys remove urea and other wastes from blood and form urine.

Kidneys
Filter blood and form urine.
Ureters
Carry urine from kidneys to urinary bladder.
Urinary bladder
Stores urine for some time.
Urethra
Carries urine out of the body.

Other Waste Removal

Lungs remove carbon dioxide and water vapour. Skin removes some water and salts through sweat.

11. Human Excretory System

Nephron

Nephron is the basic filtering unit of the kidney.

Urine Formation: Easy Steps

  1. Step 1: Filtration — Blood is filtered in the nephron.
  2. Step 2: Reabsorption — Useful substances such as water, glucose and some salts are taken back into the blood.
  3. Step 3: Secretion — Some additional wastes are added to the filtrate.
  4. Step 4: Urine — The remaining liquid becomes urine and passes to the urinary bladder.

Dialysis

If kidneys fail to filter blood properly, an artificial method called dialysis may be used to remove wastes from blood.
