1. Meaning of Prehistory

Prehistory: The period of human life before the use of written records is called Prehistory.

Easy way to understand

We do not have written books or records from prehistoric times. We learn about these people from tools, bones, pottery, rock paintings and other archaeological remains.

Three useful terms

  • Prehistory: Time before written records.
  • History: Period known mainly through written records.
  • Archaeology: Study of the past through material remains such as tools, pottery, buildings and other objects.

2. Stone Age in India

The Stone Age is the long period when people mainly used stone to make tools. For basic SSC preparation, remember these three stages:

Paleolithic
Old Stone Age
→
Mesolithic
Middle Stone Age
→
Neolithic
New Stone Age
Memory Trick: Old → Middle → New = Paleo → Meso → Neo.

3. Paleolithic Age — Old Stone Age

Meaning: Paleolithic means Old Stone Age. People mainly used rough and unpolished stone tools.

Tools 🪨

  • Hand axes
  • Choppers
  • Scrapers
  • Other simple stone tools

Food & Life 🍖

  • Hunting
  • Food gathering
  • Fishing in some areas
  • Mostly mobile life

Main features

  1. People depended mainly on hunting and food gathering.
  2. Tools were generally rough and unpolished.
  3. People moved from place to place in search of food and shelter.
  4. They lived in caves, rock shelters and simple temporary shelters.
  5. Fire was used by prehistoric humans for warmth, cooking and protection.
SSC Exam Point: Paleolithic = Old Stone Age + rough stone tools + hunting and gathering.

4. Mesolithic Age — Middle Stone Age

Meaning: Mesolithic means Middle Stone Age. It forms a transition between the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods.

Most important feature: Microliths

Microliths are very small stone tools. They are an important feature of the Mesolithic Age.

Food & Economy

  • Hunting continued
  • Food gathering continued
  • Fishing became important in many areas
  • Some communities showed early animal domestication

Culture

  • Rock paintings are found at prehistoric sites
  • People used small tools and weapons
  • Some groups became more settled than before
SSC Exam Point: Mesolithic = Middle Stone Age + microliths.

5. Neolithic Age — New Stone Age

Meaning: Neolithic means New Stone Age. Tools became more polished and people started a more settled way of life.

New Developments 🌾

  • Agriculture
  • Animal domestication
  • More settled villages
  • Pottery

Tools 🔨

  • Polished stone tools
  • Axes and adzes

Why is the Neolithic Age important?

Human life changed greatly when people learned to grow crops and domesticate animals. Farming encouraged people to stay in one place for longer periods and helped villages develop.
